While data does represent numbers, facts, figures and correlations, on a deeper level, it also tells stories. Data provides important insight leading to discoveries and ways of solving problems. It has the potential to save lives, and was especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As with any virus or infectious disease, it’s a lot like solving a puzzle, looking for pieces of information that fit together, to uncover a trail or series of circumstances leading from person to person.

Family grocery shopping is a different adventure when your mom is a public health epidemiologist called “Dr. Microbe” by her friends and colleagues. When her daughter was very young, Dr. Diana Cervantes, Director of the MPH Epidemiology program at the HSC School of Public Health, would play a little game of “let’s pretend,” where the whole store was covered in invisible creepy, grody, nasty stuff.
